How to Safely Clean and Disinfect Face Masks For You and Your Family

COVID-19 has changed the lives of many households for pretty much all of 2020. Sure enough, wearing a face mask has become symbolic of this drastic transition.

There are different kinds of face masks you can wear in public, but there only a few that can do a good job at protecting you and your loved ones from the COVID-19 virus:

  • Disposable surgical masks: While widely available and efficient, these types of masks need to be disposed of as soon as possible after use.
  • Two-ply masks: The most common variety of cloth mask available. They are washable and reusable but not as effective since it’s recommended that you wear more than two layers.
  • Three-ply masks: The best mask that can be recommended aside from medically used masks such as N95’s or even disposable surgical masks. You can reuse them after proper washing..

If you and your family own any kind of cloth masks that need to be washed, we’ve got a handy set of tips that will make sure you are all safe and prepared to go outside:

Hand-washing masks

When hand-washing your face masks, use a solution of five tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide and hot water. Use this solution for soaking and rinsing your masks thoroughly for about five minutes to make sure they are free from germs.

Machine-washing masks

Before putting your masks in the washing machine, remove any parts that can be taken off of it. Set your cycle to the highest temperature and don’t forget to add a cup of hydrogen peroxide as the washer fills up.

Drying your masks

Before wearing your masks, make sure to dry them thoroughly. Leave them out in the sunlight so as to kill off any remaining bacteria and pathogens. Alternatively, you can also use your dryer for faster results. Then again, keep in mind that dryers won’t be able to produce the heat that’s needed to kill off the virus.

Now that your masks are clean, remember to always wear it if you have to go outside. Also, don’t forget to wash your hands and observe social distancing.
